2014 is the International Year of Crystallography, as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly

Worldwide celebrations are taking place this year.

We celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Crystallography with the achievements from Max von Laue (Nobel Prize in 1914, for his discovery of X-ray diffraction by crystals), William Henry Bragg and William Lawrence Bragg (father and son, Nobel Prize in 1915). Furthermore, and as described in the UNESCO website, in 2014 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Nobel Prize to Dorothy Hodgkin (for her work in the structures of vitamin B12 and penicillin), and the 400 years of Kepler’s observation of symmetry in ice crystals, in 1611.

In order to join the event and to promote a better understanding of the role of Crystallography in our lives and our future, we, at the Campus of Caparica, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, are promoting a series of Conferences from April to December. Colleagues from around the world are invited to give a lecture, to visit and interact with our staff and students. This is a highly interdisciplinary initiative that involves researchers from the fields of biochemistry, material sciences and mathematics. The conferences will be held in the Library of FCT.

Please, check the Program schedule and speakers and plan your visits to FCT in 2014! And don’t miss the other events at FCT!

Everyone is invited, on behalf of the Director of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology.

We look forward to welcome you in our Campus.
